Designer stool made from recycled sports shoes

CrossTEQ produces high-quality composite parts for Swiss On AG using the A-Comp process

A-Comp Recycling: On sports shoes become stylish composite stool

Last year, CrossTEQ was commissioned by the Swiss company On AG to produce a designer stool from recycled sports shoes using the A-Comp process.

With A-Comp Compression Molding, CrossTEQ processes coarse, inhomogeneous or unmixed plastic waste into high-quality composite components.

In intensive development cooperation with the product designer Flavia Brändle and IKT of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, CrossTEQ produced a stool from recycled sports shoes last year on behalf of Schweizer On AG.

The Cloudtec Stool is made from 60% recycled On shoes, which equates to approximately 2.5 pairs of On shoes per seat.

The stool is inspired by the On patented cloud technology and dynamic environment at On AG's recently opened headquarters in Zurich.

The flexible seat on the simple yet striking wooden base was designed to keep the user moving while seated and fit perfectly into the modern office environment.

The Cloudtec Stool went into series production in the spring of 2022.

Each seat is 100% made in Switzerland. For this, the discarded On shoes are first shredded in the small Sammelhof-Manufaktur der Beck AG , not far from the new On headquarters.

Later, at CrossTEQ, we mix the coarse fiber material with a coloring polymer.

The fiber composite material is then scattered into the mold and heated in the compression molding machine and pressed into its final shape via various process phases.

The entire process is controlled by pressure and temperature parameters, which are precisely matched to the compression mold and content.

A-Comp: One recycling process for all waste

With A-Comp, CrossTEQ has developed an efficient recycling process based on thermosets that can make versatile use of coarse, inhomogeneous or non-sorted material streams from plastics recycling.

With A-Comp Compression Molding
 CrossTEQ can:

  • Process your plastic and composite recyclates into high-quality composite products and return them to use,
  • Reduce proportions of virgin plastics in products,
  • Recover original material properties such as grade purity, good flow behavior, homogeneity or pourability without great effort,
  • Bypass costly recycling processes,
  • Avoid thermal processing in recycling and thus reduce your CO2 footprint,
  • Increase the use of bio-based reinforcing or filling materials in products.
